Quando a genialidade fracassa: uma tentativa de aproximação entre as personagens Lönnrot e Holmes, de Jorge Luís Borges e Arthur Conan Doyle

Abstract

In this essay, I investigate the relationship between Jorge Luís Borges and Arthur Conan Doyle from the perspective of the characters Erik Lönnrot and Sherlock Holmes from the short stories “A morte e a bússola” and “A face amarela”. These texts stand out because failures committed by the protagonists produced outcomes that deviate from the traditional police narratives. We started by talking about detective novels and introducing each author, then we analyzed the selected short stories, to finally analyze points of approximation/distance between the texts and between the works of the authors. We conclude that Doyle maintains the tradition and that Borges recovers the traditional police narrative and transcends it, as a form of homage and appreciation of the genre.
