Abstract

This article aims to analyze the cheering of black men and women in Brazil. The time period covered here is from the beginning of the 20th century to the first decades of the 21st century. We seek to present images to illustrate some of the arguments we operationalize during the study. We expose that regardless of temporality, black people's cheering was treated as exotic, made impossible, or denied access. In certain speeches, the core of the participation of the black population as fans in the soccer stadiums is crossed by the economic issue, however, anchored in theories such as Silvio de Almeida's Structural Racism, we defend that the biggest struggle is not economic, but racial. The analysis of the sources shows how structural racism, a fundamental part of Brazilian society, is intertwined with the history of Brazilian soccer (here in its fan part) and brings with it obstacles to the access, practice and manifestation of black fans.
