Diagnóstico do entorno e envoltórias do edifício da Biblioteca Central da UFMG, visando a preservação do acervo de obras raras

Abstract

The surroundings and infrastructure of the buildings that house collections of cultural assets are factors of great impact on the conditions of conservation of the collections, may entail various risks due to external aspects, such as the local climate, morphological and geographical configuration in terms of topography, relief and surrounding vegetation, urban insertion and architectural implementation as well as aspects of the building, such as materials, components and construction systems of the envelopes, building systems and installations and constructive pathologies. This work presents the results of a field activity carried out in the scope of the discipline Preventive Conservation, of the course of Conservation-Restoration of Mobile Cultural Property of the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) as a practical exercise of introduction to Risks Management to the Cultural Heritage. The case study was the building of the Central Library of UFMG (BC/UFMG), with particular focus on the Division of Special Collections, located on the fourth floor. The method included on-site visits for inspection and photographic surveys and partial application of the Risk Management methodology (ICCROM, 2017), combining the diagnostic analysis of the building’s surroundings and infrastructure in connection with the institutional and materiality aspects of the collection. The article concludes by suggesting possible measures for the treatment of identified risks.
