Resumo
The purpose of this article is to present the role that the green or environmentally certified building can play in face of sustainability challenges in cities. It borrows the term "urban acupuncture" from urban planner Jaime Lerner in order to demonstrate the role of the green building, its limitations encompassed by the non-public business context, and its performance peculiarities unknown by the still poorly consolidated experiences of constructive sustainability certifications in Brazil and the world. The research first outlines the evolution scenario in the creation of sustainability indicators in cities. Second, the frameworks for sustainable neighborhoods are presented. And finally, the requirements for buildings certification most commonly applied in Brazil are discussed. The method aims to present the demands of sustainability, and the certification criteria of cities and neighborhoods, and confront them with the role that sustainability buildings certification can fulfill. Imported solutions without local reality adaptation, means artificialize the method. Nature takes its course and needs to pool health, education, mobility and safety priorities in synergy with resources scarcity. For complex issues in dynamic environments, definite conclusions point to the shortest path to error. In general terms, results can be achieved with society mobilization, creativity and use of local qualities and characteristics. The green building in this case may be the incentive to a first step towards the desired urban acupuncture.
