Resumo
Esta dissertação tem como objetivo estudar a postura adotada pelo crítico literário belga radicado nos EUA, Paul de Man, a respeito da teoria da linguagem e demonstrar o tipo de tratamento quanto à linguagem e a literatura que disso emerge. Para tanto, foram lidos e analisados os textos escritos por de Man durante seu tempo de docência nas universidades estadunidenses, bem como a bibliografia crítica relevante para o assunto. Argumenta-se que essa postura é tributária de uma abordagem filosófica derivada do próprio material examinado pelo autor, embora de seu modus operandi e não de sua temática. Pretende-se expor também a especificidade e a importância dessa postura, além de comentar sobre sua validade para os estudos literários e da linguagem em geral. Entende-se que além de implicar uma releitura de diversos conceitos centrais na teoria da literatura e da linguagem, essa postura implica também um tipo de materialismo, cujas consequências e relevância para a teoria serão constantemente expostas e revisitadas.
Abstract
This Master’s Thesis aims at studying the stance adopted by the US-based Belgian literary critic Paul de Man regarding the theory of language, and to demonstrate what type of treatment thus emerges regarding language and literature. For that, I have read and analyzed the texts written by de Man during his time of teaching in United States universities, as well as the relevant critical bibliography. I argue that such a posture owes to a philosophical approach derived from the very material examined by the author, albeit in its modus operandi, rather than its thematics. I also intend to show the specificity and importance of such a stance, in addition to commenting on its validity for the study of literature and language in general. I understand that, besides implying in a rereading of various central concepts in literary theory and the theory of language, this stance also implies a particular materialism, whose consequences and relevance to theory shall be constantly disclosed and revisited.
