Resumo
Quando se perde um ou mais dentes, ocorre uma reabsorção óssea alveolar que pode comprometer o uso de implantes convencionais, maiores que 8 mm, principalmente nas regiões posteriores da mandíbula e da maxila. O uso desses implantes pode ser indicado,associados com cirurgias previas para aumento de volume ósseo, mas que apresentam como principais desvantagens o maior desconforto para o paciente, assim como o aumento do tempo e do custo do tratamento. Outra opção de tratamento seria a utilização de implantes curtos, com menos de 8 mm de comprimento, em áreas de pouca alturaóssea, evitando-se as cirurgias reconstrutivas, porém, os aspectos biomecânicos devem ser considerados e respeitados durante o planejamento cirúrgico-protético para se garantir a longevidade dos trabalhos realizados nos pacientes
Abstract
After losing a dental alveolar bone resorption may compromise the use of conventional long implants (greater than 10 mm), mainly in posterior regions of the maxilla and mandible. The use of such implants may be indicated, associated with previous surgery to increase bone volume, but which have major drawbacks as the greatest discomfort for the patient, as well as increasing the time and cost of treatment. Another option for treatment would be the use of short implants is less than 10 mm in length, in areas of low bone height, thus avoiding the disadvantages of surgery for bone graft cited. The objective is to review the literature on theuse of short implants is less than 10 mm in length, and choice of treatment in patients with impaired alveolar ridges, addressing the biomechanical aspects as the main means of establishing the information against -indications, advantages, disadvantages, success rates, longevity, and also the approach of the surgical-prosthetic planning.
