Resumo
When two tones of slightly different frequencies are presented to each ear separately, binaural beats might be heard. Although this is an old topic, there is a renewed interest in such beats due to novel applications indicated by recent electrophysiological and psychological studies. This paper reports psychoacoustical experiments conducted to study the human binaural-beat sensitivity. We observed that it decreases almost linearly with the stimulus frequency, being virtually zero for 1400 Hz. Unlike previous works, the obtained data were analyzed using signal detection theory, so that the results are theoretically bias-free and independent of the psychophysical procedure.

This paper presented a psychoacoustical study of thehuman binaural-beat perception using a 2IFC proce-dure and 18 observers. For δf= 5 and 10 Hz, sevenf1values between 700 and 1400 Hz were tested. Theexperimental data were subjected to SDT analysis, which showed that the sensitivity to binaural beatsdecreases almost linearly with f1and remains virtu-ally unchanged whether a beat frequency of 5 or 10 Hzis used. The observers achieved a perfect detectionperformance for f1= 700 Hz, whereas the sensitivitywas near to zero for f1= 1400 Hz
