Resumo
Esta tese, intitulada “Milagros de Nuestra Señora, de Gonzalo de Berceo: a Virgem e a morte em tradução”, tem como objetivo traduzir e analisar o prólogo e os doze primeiros poemas de Milagros de Nuestra Señora, que integra a rica tradição literária da Idade Média. Inserida no contexto dos séculos XII e XIII, a pesquisa explora os gêneros textuais hagiográficos, com especial atenção ao milagro e ao exemplum. A análise dá-se, a partir da pesquisa sobre como a Virgem Maria é representada como protagonista dos milagres e mediadora no momento da morte, articulando elementos simbólicos e narrativos que refletem valores religiosos e culturais medievais. A tese destaca o papel da Virgem Maria como intercessora e como consoladora, oferecendo esperança e transcendência diante da inevitabilidade da morte. Por meio de uma abordagem interdisciplinar, que combina estudos literários e história cultural, a pesquisa examina padrões narrativos e poéticos, ressaltando como os textos de Berceo articulam dimensões espirituais, sociais e literárias. O estudo comparativo evidencia como essas representações reafirmam a centralidade da figura mariana na consolidação de valores comunitários e na construção de discursos sobre vida, morte e fé na Idade Média. Ao promover o diálogo entre tradução e estudo literário, esta tese contribui para os estudos sobre literatura hagiográfica e medieval, ampliando as possibilidades de compreensão histórica e cultural dessas narrativas fundamentais para a tradição ocidental.
Abstract
This thesis, entitled “Milagros de Nuestra Señora, by Gonzalo de Berceo: the Virgin and death in translation”, aims to translate and analyze the prologue and the first twelve poems of Milagros de Nuestra Señora, which is part of the rich literary tradition of the Middle Ages. Set within the context of the 12th and 13th centuries, the research explores Hagiographic narratives, with special attention to the milagro and the exemplum. The analysis focuses on how the Virgin Mary is portrayed as the protagonist of miracles and as a mediator at the moment of death, articulating symbolic and narrative elements that reflect medieval religious and cultural values. The thesis highlights the role of the Virgin Mary not only as a divine intercessor, but also as a comforter, offering hope and transcendence in the face of the inevitability of death. Through an interdisciplinary perspective, which combines literary studies and cultural history, the research examines narrative and poetic patterns, highlighting how Berceo's texts articulate spiritual, social, and literary dimensions. The comparative study highlights how these representations reaffirm the centrality of the Marian figure in the consolidation of community values and in the construction of discourses about life, death, and faith in the Middle Ages. By fostering a dialogue between translation and literary analysis, this thesis contributes to studies on hagiographic and medieval literature, expanding the possibilities of historical and cultural understanding of these fundamental narratives for the Western tradition.
