Intelectuais em cena

Abstract

In the present paper, which is a product of a bibliographical study, we reflect on the origin of the intellectual figure and on the resonance of his/her practice in public space. We start with the so-called “first scene” of the modern intellectual’s birth, the manifesto led by Émile Zola publicly standing in relation to the Dreyfus Case, in the nineteenth century. We also consider the portrait of the famous French writer painted by Édouard Manet, to extract the concept of modern intellectual. To this first conceptualization, other contemporary thinkers such as Norberto Bobbio, Edward Said, Francisco de Oliveira, Jacques Derrida and others are incorporated in order to also reflect on the role of the intellectual and on the University as a traditional space of generation of intellectuals.
