Resumo
In this study, the planktonic cyanobacteria community of a tropical oligo-mesotrophic reservoir was analyzed by morphological descriptions and taxonomic identifications. Samples were taken during a period of 18 months. In the order Synechococcales 17 species were observed, followed by Chroococcales, with 5 species. Even though well-known nanoplanktonic genera were observed, picoplanktonic cyanobacteria were the dominant component, showing high richness, even though biomass was low. To achieve a more robust delimitation among species belonging to three oval and rod-shaped picoplanktonic genera Anathece, Cyanodictyon and Lemmermanniella, we developed a statistical approach, based on distinctive morphological attributes. Additionally, in order to contribute some information about the genetic diversity of this community, we analyzed two samples by metagenomic tools. These results showed a larger contribution of the genera Synechococcus and Cyanobium, therefore confirming a picoplanktonic dominated community, despite biases in genomic databases. Reports of picocyanobacteria are rarer than nanoplanktonic species, since their small size is frequently a barrier to their correct identification and/or detection. Thus, this work represents an important contribution to the knowledge about this group, especially from tropical environments. Furthermore, several species of the widely distributed Microcystis genus were also observed in this aquatic system and were described.
