Resumo
There is an increasing awareness in Brazil, which is amongst the 10 largest economies in the world in the last 50 years, that entrepreneurship and innovation are major elements in engineering background. This is particularly crucial in parts
of the country whose economy is highly dependent on mineral resources, as is the case of Minas Gerais. As these resources are expected to vanish in the next 25-30 years, it is essential to restructure the curriculum of our graduate and undergraduate courses to match a new economic scenario based on smart companies and the creation of startups linked with innovation. As we experience a downturn in the economy, we rely on new approaches that maximize our resources. We have therefore created a one semester course open to graduate and undergraduate students from different areas. In addition, we are
networking prototyping labs and applied research labs to establish synergies and make the most of our available infrastructure and competences. In this paper we underline the basic features of our endeavors, the links we are establishing with the local innovation ecosystem, collaborations with universities abroad, and the impact we are having at the university at large and beyond academia. We detail the results we have achieved so far, describe some of the activities we are currently structuring, and the challenges we face as we try to scale up our multidisciplinary approach.
