Formas do subjuntivo mandativo na mídia impressa americana e britânica: uma análise com base em uso

Abstract

This research aims at discussing the use of mandative subjunctive forms in English, through an empirical analysis of data taken from 20 texts from the American Press and 20 from the British press. In order to do that, we relied on data made available online. The results of the qualitative analysis show that subjunctive forms were fully used in the texts from the American Press, and that they appear in noun clauses at direct object with the verb in its basic form. In the British Press, subjunctive forms were preferably used with a modal verb, particularly should. These results shed light not only on the description of the English language in use, but also on the importance of developing English teaching materials based on empirical data of the language, from the perspective of linguistic awareness and real use.
