Resumo
The articulation index is used to characterize the intelligibility in low-cost automotive audio systems. The influence of the electroacoustic response, as well as the spectral characteristics of the background noises, typically found in automobiles is shown. The index is calculated as a function of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for each type of noise and is compared between two test vehicles. The results from the calculation of the articulation index were also compared to literature values for both the English and Dutch languages. Last, the improvement achieved by equalizing the speech signal is discussed.
