Abstract

This thesis investigates the relationship between image and writing through a selection of works by Patrícia Galvão, based on the hypothesis that image and writing combine to conceive an imagetic autobiography. For this purpose, this thesis will analyze a selection of works produced between 1929 and 1933, a period during which the author left her mark through the composition of drawings within the modernist context. Initially, it explores the relationship between image and writing, the polysemy of the term "drawing," and its history in the field of art, especially in Brazil. This theoretical foundation underpins the analysis of Patrícia Galvão's works, which are predominantly composed of images. Next, the study addresses the works that blend drawing and writing on the same surface, examining the intermedial factors that emerge from these compositions. Finally, the productions that go beyond the manuscript line will be analyzed, when Galvão produces comics and cartoons. It is concluded that the connection between drawing and writing in the multifaceted work of Patrícia Galvão does not stem from a relationship of textual illustration, imagetic caption, or sketch production, but from a self-drawriting, a composition in which drawing and writing mutually complement each other to tell who Pagú was.
