Using electric motors with a number of phases greater than three may present some advantages over conventional three phase machines: higher reliability, reduced power per phase, increased torque density and reduced torque pulsations. As the number of phases increases, the complexity of modulation also increases: there are more switching vectors and more harmonic planes. For example: a nine-phase inverter generates 512 vectors for each one of its four harmonic planes. This paper shows a space vector modulation (SVM) scheme for a nine-phase converter in a similar way of what can be done in a MMC converter. The method uses the different amplitude regions of the nine-phase modulator to switch only certain switching vectors, depending on the modulation index. The advantage is a reduced number of ON/OFF transitions in a switching period, especially for higher modulation indexes. This capability is very interesting for high power, medium voltage inverter driven motors. Simulations and experimental results results are presented to validate the method.
