Resumo

Caryocar brasiliense seeds have pronounced dormancy. The effects of storage (up to 100 days) and immersion in a range of gibberellic acid (GA 3) concentrations on the germination and viability of seeds with (pyrene) and without (isolated seeds) the outer coatings were evaluated. Immersion of isolated seeds from freshly dispersed fruits in 50 mg L-1 of GA3 overcame dormancy (germinability > 90%). Storage of the pyrenes (for 20 or 43 days) without GA3 resulted in germination rates of isolated seeds and pyrenes of approximately 65 and 30%, respectively. Newly dispersed pyrenes exposed to 375 or 500 mg L-1 GA3 resulted in approximately 39 and 35% germination, respectively. The dormancy of Caryocar brasiliense pyrenes can be overcome by storage for 20 days or exposure to GA 3.
