Linguística aplicada às ciências da saúde: uma abordagem para a equivalência tradutória

Abstract

This study investigates translation equivalence through cluster analysis of clauses annotated with categories pertaining to the VERBALGROUP from the perspective of systemic-functional theory (HALLIDAY; MATTHIESSEN, 2014). The annotated clauses were retrieved from a protocol developed by healthcare scientists to evaluate the self-care practices by public healthcare service users diagnosed with type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. The protocol was originally written in English and translated and cross-culturally adapted into Brazilian Portuguese. A spreadsheet was used in order to annotatecategories pertaining to VERBAL GROUPS and COMPLEXES in the clauses of the original and translated protocol. The annotation was imported into the computational environment R (R CORE TEAM, 2018) in the form of a matrix. The aim was to perform a cluster analysis and obtain a dendrogram showing the level of fusion betweenthe original clauses and their translated counterparts. The analysis sought to observe if equivalent clauses at zero level in the dendrogram would indicate FORMAL CORRESPONDENCE (CATFORD,1965),and those at different levels would point to SHIFTS (CATFORD,1965). Results showed that cluster analysis can be performed to discriminate equivalent clauses that present SHIFTS from those that stand in relation of FORMAL CORRESPONDENCE.
