Resumo
Esta dissertação tem como objetivo principal analisar como o trombonista Raul de Souza
articula com o trombone de vara. A partir de entrevista com o próprio Souza, hipóteses sobre
sua forma de articular são criadas, e o trabalho mergulha numa discussão sobre a eficiência da
tradução silábica como forma de descrever a articulação utilizada por um trombonista. A partir
disso, uma discussão sobre fonética articulatória e dois diferentes experimentos com algumas
sílabas articulatórias utilizadas na literatura do trombone de vara são realizados. A pesquisa,
então, segue em frente com a transcrição silábica de alguns solos de Souza, em que foram
inferidas, através da escuta, as sílabas utilizadas pelo músico durante as performances. A partir
destas transcrições, uma avaliação das combinações silábicas utilizadas pelo músico é feita,
atentandose às semelhanças e diferenças de sua forma de articular com a proposta no método
doodle tonguing, sistematizado por Mcchesney (1992). No final do texto, outras características
do músico também são observadas e contextualizadas a partir de análises de performances do
trombonista J.J Johnson, realizadas em Bourgois III (1986) e Lancaster (2009), levando a
importantes considerações sobre a singularidade musical de Raul de Souza.
Abstract
This dissertation aims to analyze how the trombonist Raul de Souza articulates with the slide
trombone. Based on an interview with Souza himself, hypotheses about his form of articulation
are created, and the work delves into a discussion about the efficiency of syllabic translation as
a way of describing the articulation used by a trombonist. From this, a discussion on articulatory
phonetics and two different experiments with some articulatory syllables used in the slide
trombone literature are carried out. The research, then, goes ahead with the syllabic
transcription of some solos by Souza, in which the syllables used by the musician during
performances were inferred through listening. From these transcripts, an evaluation of the
syllabic combinations used by the musician is made, paying attention to the similarities and
differences in their way of articulating in the doodle tonguing method, systematized by
Mcchesney (1992). At the end of the text, other characteristics of the musician are also observed
and contextualized from the analysis of performances by trombonist J.J Johnson, carried out in
Bourgois III (1986) and Lancaster (2009), leading to important considerations about the musical
uniqueness of Raul de Souza .
