A batalha dos topônimos: reversão toponímica nos primórdios da cidade de belo horizonte

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the process of toponymic reversion in the City of Belo Horizonte carried out by Municipal Law no. 182, of October 13, 1919. The analysis was based on the taxonomic models of toponymy by Dick (1990) and Seabra (2016). It was tested the hypothesis that the reversion was motivated by the fact that the previous changes in the city’s toponymy, between 1908 and 1918, did not conform to the patterns of place names attribution of Aarão Reis in the city planning in 1895. It was argued that the hypothesis proceeds due to the innovation of honoring a public figure linked to the area of science with Municipal Law nº 127, of April 3, 1917, a type of pratice that still did not exist in the system of 1895. However, it was also possible to identify an ideological clash, related to the worldview of those involved, with opposition between the academic and the political.
