Resumo
Neste artigo, examinamos aspectos de duas obras da literatura técnica produzida em Roma Antiga. Referimo-nos ao tratado chamado De re rustica (séc. I d.C.) e àquele cujo nome é Opus agriculturae (séc. IV-V d.C.). Primeiramente, apresentamos as duas obras citadas no tocante à sua estruturação básica e temas, com o objetivo de favorecer a introdução ao assunto estudado. Em seguida, focalizando o tema das abelhas, esclarecemos a importância do mel, equivalente ao açúcar na Antiguidade, e da cera de abelha em Roma Antiga. Depois, diferenciamos a organização dos livros do tratado De re rustica e de Opus agriculturae. Além disso, retomamos com mais foco os assuntos de apicultura nas duas obras e ainda comparamos, com base em trechos sobre a apicultura, o estilo de Columela – mais copioso e variado – e o de Paládio – mais conciso e “objetivo”.
Abstract
This article examines two pieces of technical literature written in ancient Rome. We are referring to the treatises De re rustica (1st century AD) and Opus agri-culturae (4th–5th century AD). To begin, we provide the two works listed in terms of their basic structure and themes, with the goal of easing an introduction to the topic examined. Then, focusing on bees, we discuss the importance of honey, which was similar to sugar in anti-quity, and beeswax in ancient Rome. Next, we distin-guish the organization of the books in the works De re rustica and Opus agriculturae. Furthermore, we reiterate, with a deeper focus, beekeeping issues in both works. We also compare Columella’s style (richer and varied) to Palladius’ (briefer and “objective”) using selected extracts.
