Syphilis is caused by the sexual transmission of Treponema
pallidum. The oral cavity is commonly affected. Resurgence of syph ilis has been reported in the last few years.
Objective: To describe the clinico-demographic features of
syphilis patients attending a reference center for oral medicine
service of a public hospital. A retrospective 12-year study was per formed. Clinical records of all patients diagnosed with acquired
syphilis with an oral manifestation, who were followed-up from
2005 to 2016, were reviewed and the data was collected. A total
of 85 patients were diagnosed, and none had a previous diagno sis of syphilis. An increase in the number of cases (672.72%) in
the last 5 years was evidenced. The age of the patients ranged from
16 to 76 years, with a peak in the second and fifth decades; 48
(56.57%) patients were men and 37 (43.53%) women. Most of the
oral lesions presented as a single ulcer or plaque. The most af fected sites were the lips and tongue.
Conclusion: We observed an increased frequency of oral syph ilis diagnosis in the last 5 years, in accordance with that reported
in recent literature. Dentists should be informed and trained with
respect to the diagnosis of syphilitic oral lesions.
