The unsettled legacy of Frank H. Knight's risk, uncertainty, and profit: a bibliometric exploration

Resumo
Our chapter discusses the myriad ways in which Frank H. Knight’s Risk, Uncertainty, and Profit (RUP) has been incorporated by different streams of scholarship dedicated to institutional analysis since 1990, when bibliometric evidence indicates a revival of interest in his classic work. Using citation analysis, the authors identify clusters of scholarship that build on Knight’s contributions, assessing which of his insights were absorbed by different subfields and how these have been connected to recent topics and concerns. The authors then qualitatively explore these results to throw new light on the recent history of institutional economics, using Knight’s RUP as a window into the evolution of (and inter-relations between) different research traditions that currently populate the field, including new economic sociology, comparative politics, evolutionary economics, entrepreneurial studies, environmental social sciences, international political economy, and the anthropology of finance. The authors conclude that Knight’s legacy remains unsettled, with different groups selectively absorbing a subset of his ideas and developing them in relative isolation from research conducted elsewhere. Nevertheless, boundary work connecting these separate areas reveals possible spaces for collaboration among scholars who study institutions building explicitly on Knightian insights.
Abstract
Nosso capítulo discute as inúmeras maneiras pelas quais o livro Risk, Uncertainty, and Profit (RUP) de Frank H. Knight foi incorporado por diferentes correntes acadêmicas dedicadas à análise institucional desde 1990, quando evidências bibliométricas indicam um renascimento do interesse por seu trabalho clássico. Utilizando a análise de citações, os autores identificam grupos de estudos que se baseiam nas contribuições de Knight, avaliando quais dos seus insights foram absorvidos por diferentes subcampos e como estes foram ligados a tópicos e preocupações recentes. Os autores exploram então qualitativamente estes resultados para lançar uma nova luz sobre a história recente da economia institucional, usando o RUP de Knight como uma janela para a evolução (e inter-relações entre) diferentes tradições de investigação que actualmente povoam o campo, incluindo a nova sociologia económica, política comparada, economia evolutiva, estudos empresariais, ciências sociais ambientais, economia política internacional e antropologia das finanças. Os autores concluem que o legado de Knight permanece incerto, com diferentes grupos absorvendo selectivamente um subconjunto das suas ideias e desenvolvendo-as em relativo isolamento da investigação realizada noutros locais. No entanto, o trabalho de fronteira que liga estas áreas separadas revela possíveis espaços para colaboração entre estudiosos que estudam instituições que se baseiam explicitamente nas percepções Knightianas.
