| dc.description.abstract | In all states of Brazil, it is possible to find the species Pouteria torta (Mart.) Radlk. (Fig. 1), popularly known as abiu (abieiro, guapeva or axe handle), a medium-sized native tree with alternate leaves that, when broken, release a characteristic latex. Its edible fruits can be used to differentiate species of the same genus, due to the difference in color: when the fruit is yellowish, it is the species P. torta or P. caimito and the purple fruit belongs to the species P. gardneri. However, although these species present some morphological differences, they are often confused when collected. | |

| local.description.resumo | Em todos os estados do território brasileiro, é possível encontrar a espécie Pouteria torta (Mart.) Radlk. (Fig. 1), conhecida popularmente como abiu (abieiro, guapeva ou cabo de machado), uma árvore nativa, de médio porte, folhas alternas e que, quando partidas, liberam látex característico. Seus frutos, comestíveis, podem ser utilizados para diferenciação de espécies do mesmo gênero, devido a diferença de coloração: quando o fruto é amarelado trata-se da espécie P. torta ou P. caimito e o fruto roxo pertence a espécie P. gardneri. Contudo, embora essas espécies apresentem algumas diferenças morfológicas, muitas vezes são confundidas no momento de coleta. | |
