Cultura e ambiente: hagiotopônimos na hidronímia da mesorregião norte maranhense

Abstract

This work presents an analysis of hagiotoponyms that name hydronyms of North Maranhense Mesoregion, aiming to examine the relationship between culture, environment and toponymy. The corpus was extracted from the database of the master's dissertation entitled Along the waterways: a study of the hydronymy of the North Maranhense Mesoregion (PEREIRA, 2017). The bank covers 60 municipalities in Maranhão and was created based on official IBGE maps (2010), with scales ranging from 1: 50,000 to 1: 100,000. For this study, based on the work of Dick (2004; 1995), Sapir (1961) and Chaves (1956), 40 hagiotoponyms were selected. The results point to religiosity as a significant factor in the nomination process in the context of Maranhão's hydronym.
