Geografias imaginadas: o mundo pelo olhar do outro

Abstract

From the day the eyes of geographers were directed to literature, writing worldwide started to become part of the way we interact with the world also through a discourse elaborated by fiction. Thus, considering the short story that tackles the relationship of a blind man with the world from his helper’s perspective in Mia Couto’s work Estórias Abensonhadas, I intend here to move across between reading and writing to understand how literature can contribute to create our everyday living. When we turn ourselves to the literary text, our geographic look can contemplate the words that have taken the paper’s blank space to live an experience that produces meaning so we can apprehend reality. Thus, by writing I noticed how emotion connects us with the world and crosses that one thing that passes through us and directs itself to imagination. The reader resigns from being a reader to become part of the narrative through experience. That is imagination: it gives us the capacity of imagining and living in a real world that used to be fictional. Imagined geographies!
