| dc.description.abstract | In this article we aim to examine the theoretical-critical foundations that underpin the ambivalent approach to the novel as a genre sustained in the work of Jules Michelet. Our hypothesis is that there is a theory of the novel in Michelet’s work which would explain his problematic views on this genre, torn between attraction and refusal. In order to do this, the article revisits, first, the theoretical structure on which this historiographic work is based, particularly its relationship with the philosophy of Giambattista Vico. Second, we undertake a first attempt to systematize Michelet’s criticism of the novel by taking into account the historic-theoretical approach proposed in the La Bible de l’Humanité (1864). | |

| local.description.resumo | O objetivo deste artigo é investigar as bases para o entendimento teórico crítico do romance dentro da obra de Jules Michelet (1798-1874). A hipótese de fundo é a existência de uma teoria do romance em Michelet, teoria essa que ajudaria a explicar a relação ambivalente que o historiador sempre manteve com o gênero, feita de atração e recusa categórica. Para tanto, o artigo explora, em primeiro lugar, o arcabouço teórico próprio à obra desse historiador, com especial atenção para o seu entendimento do poético, inspirado na obra do filósofo Giambattista Vico. Tendo essa revisão como base, empreende-se uma primeira tentativa de sistematização de sua apreensão crítica do romance, tal qual ela aparece, em particular, no título La Bible de l’Humanité (1864). | |
