Resumo
Nesta tese, a partir da leitura de textos autênticos redigidos em inglês, são discutidas as interpretações sobre as manifestações lingüísticas do tempo, associado ao aspecto e à modalização verbais. Estiveram envolvidos na coleta dos dados oitenta graduandos da área tecnológica, matriculados em curso de leitura em língua estrangeira (inglês), distribuídos em quatro turmas já constituídas. Os dados foramcoletados em sala de aula, em um momento de avaliação da aprendizagem, por meio de uma tarefa especialmente elaborada para atender, ao mesmo tempo, aos objetivos do curso no que diz respeito à leitura e à pesquisa. Os textos lidos são de divulgação científica, de interesse dos informantes. Durante a coleta, respeitou-se o contrato situacional de sala de aula, mantendo-se os sujeitos (alunos e professor) em seus respectivos papéis, fator crucial em uma pesquisa exploratória, de caráter descritivo. Os dados mostraram certa instabilidade nas interpretações dos sujeitos para os planos enunciativos da história e do discurso. Os informantes não se mostraram sensíveis aos efeitos de sentido de alguns tempos verbais do passado, nem à dimensão temporal das modalizações. Pela diversidade interpretativa da categoria tempo, esta pesquisa sugere que a estrutura temporal do discurso apresenta efeitos importantes na compreensão, tratando-se, portanto, de um fenômeno que deve ser amplamente explorado no ensino da leitura em língua estrangeira.
Abstract
In this study the interpretations of the linguistic manifestations of time and its relations with aspect and modality are discussed. Eighty undergraduate Brazilian students of the technological area, who were enrolled in a reading course in English as a Foreign Language, were the research subjects. The data were collected during the final term examination. A task specially designed to achieve both the purposes of the evaluation and research was carried out in the classroom, after the reading of four authentic texts of the same genre, which were of interest for the students. In this exploratory research, effort was made to keep the natural classroom environment unchanged during data gathering, leaving both the teacher and the students in their roles. Data revealed a considerable difference in the interpretations of the utterance production frame, i.e., the distinction made by the French tradition of the works ofÉmile BENVENIST between discourse and history. The research subjects were not able to perceive the different meanings of some absolute tenses neither did they understand the temporal dimension of verbal modalities. The variability of the interpretations of the categories of time suggests that the temporal dimension of discourse is an important component of reading comprehension and that temporality should be considered as a relevant element in reading courses in foreign language
