Abstract

This study talks about the issue of oral manifestations of sickle cell anemia and management of patients by dentists in primary care. The central objective is the knowledge of the main oral manifestations of the disease and treatment by the dental team. The research was carried out in the databases LILACS, Scielo, Google, PubMed and Portal Capes, where was selected only articles that addressed oral health issues and sickle cell anemia. The articles were chosen between the years 2001 and 2011. It is a literature review conducted after checking that the sickle cell anemia is highly prevalent in the State of Minas Gerais, particularly in the north. Sickle cell anemia is an inherited autosomal genetic disease that causes sickling of red blood cells which causes occlusion vein affect issues throughout the body including the oral mucosa deserving special attention by the dental surgeon. The most common oral abnormalities are found in bone gnathic as osteomyelitis and oral mucosa as a blanching of the mucosa can also affect the teeth and periodontium. Treatment of patients with sickle cell disease by the dentist requires some care as example the prescription antibiotic prophylaxis in invasive procedures and a good review of medical history and current status of the patient for treatment with less chance of iatrogenic diseases. There are still few studies on the subject are needed and clinical studies conducted for a better analysis of patients affected by disease. Key-
