Resumo
Este artigo analisa os impactos da viagem de Benjamin Franklin Ramiz Galvão à Europa, em 1873,
para a reformulação da Biblioteca Nacional, instituição dirigida por este intelectual desde 1870.
Procurou-se perceber essa viagem como um
ponto central no processo de modernização da
BN, na medida em que serviu para a alteração de
seus estatutos e, em especial, para sintonizar a
biblioteca brasileira a outros espaços letrados europeus e também americanos. Inicialmente, o artigo ressalta a importância da viagem na formação
intelectual de Ramiz Galvão e aborda também de
que maneira deslocamentos como o que fez o diretor da BN evidenciam a estreita relação mantida
entre intelectuais e Estado naquele momento.
Em seguida, analisa o principal fruto dessa visita
à Europa: um minucioso relatório produzido por
Galvão sobre o funcionamento das bibliotecas
que conheceu. O objetivo foi cotejar essas informações com os Estatutos da Biblioteca Nacional
de 1876, buscando perceber como os modelos
europeus serviram à formação de um projeto de
biblioteca brasileira e também para a criação de
uma rotina de serviços para a instituição. Por fim,
este estudo analisa como a viagem favoreceu a
inserção de Ramiz numa rede de sociabilidade internacional que envolvia livreiros, bibliotecários e
bibliófilos e a importância dessa rede no projeto
de reestruturação do funcionamento (e da imagem) da Biblioteca Nacional.
Abstract
This study analyzes the impacts of Benjamin
Franklin Ramiz Galvão’s trip to Europe, in 1873, on
the restructuring of National Library (NL), which
was under his management since 1870. It seeks to
regard this trip as a milestone in the modernization process of NL since it contributed to changing the library statutes and, mainly, to tuning the
Brazilian library to other literary spaces in Europe
and the USA. Firstly, this study highlights the importance of this trip to Ramiz Galvão’s intellectual
development and how this kind of trip reveals the
close relationship built between intellectuals and
government then. Secondly, it analyzes the main
fruit of his visit to Europe: a detailed report by Galvão on how the libraries he visited worked. The
aim here was to collate information from both the
report and the National Library Statutes of 1876
in order to understand how European models afforded both the development of a Brazilian library
project and the establishment of daily activities
in the institution. Finally, it analyzes how the trip
enabled Ramiz to engage in an international social network, which encompassed booksellers,
librarians and bibliophiles, and the importance of
this network to the project of re-establishing the
operation (and image) of National Library.
