Abstract

The quotas policy in Brazil was implemented in order to reduce the inequalities in the access to the Higher Education. The present work was based on the discussion regarding racial quotas in the access, permanence and progress of the students of the Government School, an integrating part of the João Pinheiro Foundation. Taking into account the current discussions regarding quotas policy, it is possible to perceive the need to ampliate the policies of permanence and monitoring of the quotists throughout the undergraduate course. The objective of this work is to critically understand whether there is a welcoming and supporting policy for the quotist students in the Government School of the João Pinheiro Foundation. After interview and document analysis, the results indicate the necessity of a greater support and encouragement for the quotist students, once inequality remains despite the higher education access policy. The implementation of policies that support permanence does not necessarily involve financial resources, but depends on monitoring the students throughout the course.
