Title: | Crises as the rule or as the exception: why is capitalism still alive? |
Authors: | Fernanda Cimini Salles |
Abstract: | Are Financial Crises the rule or the exception in modern capitalism? Bearing the 2008 Financial Crisis in mind, this essay explores how the key paradigms in political economy conceive of the continuities and changes in capitalism in order to understand their reach and limits to explain the crisis of 2008. It compares two different theoretical perspectives contrasting how they conceptualize all the mess created by the financial system. Basically, it juxtaposes those who see economic crises as moments of exception, represented by mainstream economics, with those who see economic crises as the rule in capitalist societies, represented by the sociological approach. The paper finds the Weberian explanation the most compelling one. The implication of such assessment goes beyond the theoretical debate, giving that the way policy-makers and businessmen alike conceive of capitalist dynamics shapes their action. |
