Authors: Adriana de França Drummond

Abstract: INTRODUCTION: Since the development of the occupational therapy profession in 1917 in the United States, the field has extended to several countries. The first undergraduate occupational therapy program in Brazil started in 1956 in Rio de Janeiro. OBJECTIVE: We describe the history of occupational therapy in Brazil, from historical events that facilitated the early development of the profession until the present time. METHODS: This is a descriptive and historical overview of occupational therapy in Brazil. RESULTS: The training of occupational therapists occurred unevenly across different regions of Brazil, with a higher concentration of professionals in the southeastern region, in São Paulo, which has the highest income per capita. After implementation of the Unified Health System in 1988, the role of the occupational therapist has expanded to health promotion and primary prevention. In Brazil, there are currently 16,611 practicing occupational therapists, and the first postgraduate program in occupational therapy started in Brazil in 2010 at the Federal University of São Carlos. CONCLUSION: Challenges and expectations for professional training, research, and practice in occupational therapy in Brazil are greatly dependent on the planning and execution of government legislation and policies that prioritize health and education.
