Title: | 25-hydroxyvitamin d threshold values should be age-specific |
Authors: | Lilian Mellosoares William Pedrosa Silvana Maria Elói Santos Leonardo Souza Vasconcellos |
Abstract: | The demand for 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25-OHD) testing has risen massively in recent years. This renewed interest in vitamin D could be explained, at least in part, by the worldwide tendency toward insufficiency, which has been noticed since the adoption of new cutoff values used to define optimal concentrations based on functional meas urements [1, 2]. One of the most common functional defini tions of vitamin D “sufficiency” is based on serum 25-OHD concentrations which maximally suppress parathyroid hormone (PTH) secretion [1]. Although vitamin D require ments are thought to vary with age, no differences have been observed in reported thresholds. From the youngest to the elderly, 30 ng/mL has been the most frequently adopted cutoff value for defining optimal vitamin D status. |
