Abstract: To assess educational needs and to plan training programmes in the field of Transfusion Medicine, questionnaires have been used to measure the knowledge of physicians, residents and undergraduate students regarding the processes involved in blood transfusions. Broadly, it was concluded that additional education is needed (Rock et al., 2002; Gharehbaghian et al., 2009; Arinsburg et al., 2012; Graham et al., 2014; Haspel et al., 2014). Insufficient training during undergraduate medical courses has been pointed out as the main cause of this scenario (Karp et al., 2011). However, the contribution of undergraduate education for the physician’s competence in Transfusion Medicine is unclear. In Brazil, the minimum competencies required for blood transfusion management are not even well established in the National Curriculum Guidelines for Undergraduate Education in Medicine. The aim of this report was to provide the first evaluation of the knowledge in Transfusion Medicine in undergraduate students and residents in Brazil in order to identify the variables associated with learning. The use of various groups of subjects in the study design allowed for stratified levels of learning in each segment of training and could guide the best educational strategy for training in Transfusion Medicine.
