Dmitri Shostakovich e a música soviética na imprensa brasileira (1942-1946)

Abstract

The 1930s and 1940s in Brazil and around the world were years of intense political, social and musical change. Despite this, Soviet music is still an object of study that lacks diversified approaches, which are not only related to the works and the life of a specific composer, but that takes into consideration sociological, historical, political aspects, among others. Given this, this research aims to analyze the information and discussions around Soviet music and, more specifically, the Seventh Symphony (1941) by Dmitri Shostakovich in the Brazilian press between the years 1942 and 1946 to understand the dynamics between music and politics and their intersections. For this, a documental survey was carried out focusing mainly on newspapers and magazines published in Brazil in this period, searching for Soviet music, the surname of the Soviet composer Dmitri Shostakovich and the Leningrad Symphony in the Hemeroteca Digital. Simultaneously, a mapping of the Brazilian bibliography that partially or totally approaches the theme was carried out, as well as works that contribute to the understanding of the political, historical and social context. And an epistolary survey that contributed to the understanding of the personalities identified in the hemerographic sources. Thus, some questions guided the analysis of the Brazilian press publications: What discussions and information about Soviet music were conveyed by the Brazilian press in this period? In what way did the changes that took place after 1945 impact the information about Soviet music in the press? What was disseminated and discussed about the premiere of Shostakovich's Seventh Symphony in Brazil? Resulting in the construction of this dissertation in two chapters, in the first highlighting the views of mediating intellectuals and, in the second, the repercussion around Dmitri Shostakovich's Seventh Symphony and its premiere in Brazil.
