Abstract: Introduction: In recent years, there has been a significant in crease of the number of elderly people in Brazil, creating new demands in health care for this group, including care for oral dis eases. However, data on the prevalence of oral lesions in the elderly is scarce. Objectives: To review archives from a bucco-maxillofacial pa thology laboratory, in 2003-2015, evaluating the diagnoses of patients aged ≥60 years. Study Design: The biopsy records of 2,709 histopathologi cal reports were reviewed; demographic and diagnostic data were collected. The lesions were grouped into categories according to specific characteristics. Results: A higher incidence of lesions was observed in females, and the predominant age group was 65 to 84 years. The most fre quent groups of lesions were non-neoplastic proliferative lesions, followed by cancerous lesions and benign and malignant epithe lial neoplasias. The most frequent diagnosis was inflammatory fibrous hyperplasia, followed by squamous cell carcinoma, leu koplakia, hyperkeratosis, and inflammatory lesion. Conclusion: These results may be useful to determine the more frequent oral lesions among elderly individuals and, consequent ly, to determine the necessary actions to be taken towards this specific population, encouraging preventive actions by health pro fessionals and governmental entities.
