Abstract: Objectives To describe the main demographic and clinical characteristics of lesions with histopathologic diagnosis of benign tumor of the peripheral nerve sheath (BTPNS). Study Design The biopsy files from an oral and maxillofacial pathology service were assessed and cases with histopathologic diagnosis of neurofibroma, neurilemoma, or palisaded encapsulated neuroma (PEN) were selected. Results A total of 94 BTPNSs were diagnosed among 38119 biopsy specimens (0.25%). Of these, 58 were neurofibromas (61.7%). Most patients were female (61, 64.9%), with ages ranging from the second to the fourth decade (56, 59.6%). The main anatomic location affected by neurofibroma was gingiva (19, 32.8%). Neurilemomas were mainly located on the tongue (9, 37.5%) and PEN in the buccal mucosa (5, 41.7%). Most of the lesions had mucosa-like color (52, 55.3%) and median size of 15 mm and were painless (76, 80.9%). Among neurofibromas, 7 cases were associated with neurofibromatosis (12.1%). Conclusions The BTPNSs were uncommon diagnoses at the oral and maxillofacial pathology service. The lesions were mainly neurofibromas, affected women, had mucosa-like color, and had median lesion size larger than 1 cm. Some neurofibromas were associated with neurofibromatosis.
