Abstract: | Dystocia is relatively frequent in small animal clinic routine. The majority of them, being of maternal origin, demands of the veterinarian some experience for making a decision of which optimum protocol to be followed so it can allow the female´s life maintenance and keep the viability of the litter. Drugs can and must be used before a surgical intervention, saved in the situations of obstructive dystocia. The surgical intervention, or cesarean section, must be carried through in cases in which the veterinarian cannot induce the birth of the litter using medicines or in those cases of dystocia in previous birth, alterations in the conformation of pelvis or blockage of the birth canal. During the surgery, the anesthetic protocol must be done carefully to prevent the cardio-respiratory depression of the female and of the fetus. The assistance to the puppies and the female in the postoperative period must be cautious to guarantee the health of both of them. |
