Abstract

A holistic approach to postpartum care and inherent in it, especially with regard to both mother and child must be the fruit of deep reflection and discussion on the part of health workers in view the ultimate goal, the promotion of health in family and, consequently, society in general. The obstetric and neonatal care should have the essential characteristics of a quality and humanization. It is the duty of the services and health professionals accept with dignity the woman and newborn, focusing on them as subjects of rights. This host, or host, is essential for humanization. Implies approval of the woman, since his arrival at the clinic, blaming himself for her, listening to their complaints, allowing it to express their concerns, anxieties, and resolute attention ensuring liaison with other health services for continuity of care when necessary. Good knowledge of the subject by the nurse and the ability to use teaching strategies, contribute to the effectiveness of their actions. Thus, the nurse, to develop educational activities with postpartum, you should do them in order to self-care, participation in the postpartum care of the newborn, as well as their general well being. The aim of this study is to develop a primer comprising the primary care nursing in the care of both the mother and newborn for health promotion and prevention of development of this worsen. For elaboration of this booklet was performed a critical evaluation of the literature concerning primary care in attention to both the mother and the newborn and the importance of nursing care in this line of women's health. From this, there was the drawing up proposals for the primer, which were discussed and reviewed by a panel of professional service, until the version produced. Health education is crucial to ensuring the promotion of maternal and child health. This booklet was prepared to offer material to enhance education in women's health. The data collected allow the establishment of appropriate guidelines on the changes and phases of the puerperium, which should be available to women in this important phase of feminine life. Important to note that the booklet should be widely discussed by the team for all professionals and people involved in the care of the newborn, aiming at comprehensive care to this population.
