Conjurar imagens, interrogá-las: a prática fotodocumentária de Nan Goldin como poética de montagem

Abstract

By observing the centrality of editing procedures in Nan Goldin´s work, this study aims to rethink previous interpretations of the artists audiovisual and photographic production, undertaking a more detailed analysis of her most relevant slideshow and book, The ballad of sexual dependency. Bearing in mind the specific modes of construction ofthe narrative and composition under composition, we examine nodal points of her poiesis, such as the archive and the dissensual and consensual relations established between word and image. These points afford us a critical stance on the perspectives that mark the current academic studies and art criticism on the subject, questioning therelevance of the characterizations to which Goldin´s works were subsumed, especially concerning the notions of autobiography, friendship, intimacy and the line of thought on gender and sexuality that they instigate.
