Abstract: The altarpiece of the Portuguese National Style was dubbed by Robert Smith in his celebrated book on woodcarving in Portugal. In Minas is possible to find traces of this style in rare parts of the late XVII. In the eighteenth century, particularly until 1725, the use of these structures became common. The Portuguese National in Minas brand in the cradle of one of the most magnificent artistic and cultural epochs, bequeathing us works of inestimable value and high level artists. However, since attempts to systematize, and classify our altarpieces made by Germain Bazin and Lúcio Costa, the interest in the Portuguese National stagnated, causing a harmful delay in understanding the early years of gold exploration and creative output. Therefore, we propose a systematic study of this style altarpieces in Minas Gerais, with stylistic and iconographic approaches, proposing schools or workshops related to hoist the early eighteenth century in Minas Gerais.
