Abstract

This paper aims to present the results obtained in the translation process of two articles published in an Indian newspaper “The Sufi” and “Sex and the Indian” by Makarandi Paranjape. The translations were made from English to Portuguese in order to highlight the challenges faced and choices made by the translator when translating texts that have strong cultural linguistic traits that are different from the target language. In order to analyze culturally marked terms, it used the translation modalities model (Aubert 1984,1988). These are defined in five categories such as Loan, Decal, Explicit, Modulation, and Explicit Borrowing. The definitions are presented during the assignment dialoguing with the stages of the translation process.This process allowed us to observe cultural barriers, as well as similarities and differences between the language pair Portuguese and English. In this way, the translator becomes a mediator between the two cultures, presenting the socio-cultural aspects present in the original work.
