Oral squamous cell carcinoma is the most common malignant neoplasm of the oral cavity and is characterized by low survival rate and adverse prognosis. Objective: This study aimed to
summarize accurately the scientific information about immunohistochemical markers related to prognosis and survival
in patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma, due to the lack of
one specific marker considered to be reliable to predict the
behavior of this disease. Study Design: Articles written in
English and published between 2007-2017 were chosen from
PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, LILACS, and LIVIVO databases. Results: A total of 2972 articles were found. After inclusion and exclusion criteria, 362 articles were followed for
qualitative analysis and risk of bias definition of each article.
One hundred twenty-eight articles with a high risk of bias were
found; 90 had a moderate risk of bias and 144 had a low risk of
bias. These 144 articles described 148 immunohistochemical
markers for prognosis and survival. Among these markers, Ecadherin, Ki-67, b-catenin and CA9 were the most studied
markers in at least 3 articles. Conclusion: These results suggest
that these 4 proteins should be considered for future follow-up
studies evaluating biological markers of prognosis and survival
in patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma.
