A Fortuna Instável do Patrimônio: des-invibilizando @monumentosincomodos no Chile

Abstract

This article takes as its starting point the distinction between “intended monuments” and “unintended monuments”, proposed by Alois Riegl, to address the current destruction of statues and monuments dedicated to people and facts associated with slavery, colonialism and racism. To do so, we will focus on movements in Latin America, notably in Chile, where a series of protests, which demanded the deepening of the transition process towards democracy and more dignified, just, and egalitarian living conditions, targeted monuments, with 1,353 monuments damaged between October 2019 and February 2020. To follow this case, we will use the movement/platform @monumentosincomodos, created by a group of artists and intellectuals, where the essential characteristics constituting the new social movements of the beginning of the 21st century are intertwined, virtually and materially.
