Abstract

Happiness, As Such was published by Natalia Ginzburg in 1973. The author's first epistolary novel address themes central to her entire literary production, such as family life, the trauma of political violence, and memory. The book is populated by a series of objects that connect to these themes in various ways. The objective of this dissertation, therefore, is to analyze concepts related to clothing, spatiality, and letters within literature, linking them to the concept of memory and investigating how objects and reminiscences intertwine in the novel under examination. Thus, the relationship between material objects and the recollection of past events, emotions, and the characters’ subjectivity will be explored. This research will draw on contributions from theorists such as Anne Carson, Marcel Proust, Michel Foucault and Walter Benjamin.
