Abstract

This thesis discusses the situation of basic rights and the real conditions of women deprived of their liberty in the state of Amazonas. The research focused on the Women's Detention Center of Manaus, making a selection of data produced between the years 2022 and 2023. The criminological incidence perpetrated by women was analyzed according to the types of crimes committed, as well as outlining the profile socioeconomic and demographic characteristics of inmates serving provisional sentences and those who have already been judged definitively. The study diagnosed, through bibliographical research, and, using documentary analysis as an approach technique, that both white women, brown women, and black women, are associated with drug trafficking crimes, followed by crimes of homicides, property and child abuse. It was also found that Amazonas does not have an efficient re-education and social reintegration plan for women during their sentence or for those released from the prison system. The direction of internal social work in the prison unit studied is consistent with the orientation of public policies applied in other penitentiaries in Brazil, with no expectation of changes capable of improving the prison system. The study pointed out that there is a lack of more humanized treatment for inmates in the researched unit, taking into account the deficiency of health, education and work policies, confronting the dignity of women with their private freedom. Furthermore, the research revealed that the methods used in the daily life of the Manaus Women's Detention Center, by military police officers instead of prison guards, do not comply with internal and international legislation regarding the execution of sentences. In the study, it is concluded that there is a need to discuss and correct the situation of women deprived of liberty, pointing to a greater investment in human beings, in essentially educational, labor and health issues, especially mental, since the prison system with the passage of time degenerates the healthy rationality of any person serving their sentence.
