Abstract: This paper discusses in-wheel electric tractive systems, bringing as a case study the finite element design of a Fractional Slot Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine with non-Overlaping Winding (FSPMSM) for an all-wheel drive Formula Student powertrain. The goal is to obtain a system that fits a 10” rim wheel, with a high power density that enables a 280 kg vehicle to accelerate over 75 meters in less than 4 seconds. Iterating the design method to maximize the output torque, the simulations indicate that a single 12,000 rpm machine can provide continuous 17.7 kW at the 600 Vdc system.
