Abstract: | In this theoretical essay, we discuss the relationship between the teachingrole and the social recognition of teachers. We seek to understand what the aspects that specify teaching and outline the social place occupied by teachers today are, with the aim ofto answer some concerns: what is the role of the teacher? Is this profession socially recognized? In what way do educational reforms affect teacher work?We start fromthe principle that there is a relationship between the lack of a clear definition of the teaching role and the little social recognition of the teacher. We argue that the teaching role resides primarily in the act of teaching. Based on studies by Freire (2005a;2005b;2006), Arroyo (2011), Gadotti (2011), Roldão (2007), among other authors, we highlight the political-pedagogical character of teaching for the construction of liberating, democratic, emancipatory education. From this perspective, the act of teaching constitutes a complex activity, which demands a series of requirements in line with human development. |
