Abstract: The aim of this work is to show the importance of the study of advertising language in the classroom as a contribution to the formation of critical readers. Emphasis is put on the persuasive aspects of advertisements, the manipulation of human needs, the underlying ideology and the written and iconic devices used to influence consumers. Some suggestions of pedagogical activities are provided in order to show how the theory discussed can be translated into practical exercises.
